He picked up one, but the words were all wrong. He moved a bit further down the
row. Duo had six cards in his hand, and he was still picking some up.
The thing was, greeting cards were pretty lame.
"Here," Duo shoved four of them in his face. "What do you think
of these?"
Heero took the cards, frowning slightly. He gave Duo a look. "A
monkey?"
Duo shrugged. "People like monkeys. It's a scientific fact."
Heero wasn't convinced. He looked at the other ones. "This one isn't
bad." He handed Duo back the one with the sailboat on it.
Frowning, Duo turned it all around. "Really? But
it's not funny…"
"Funny…" Heero moved down to where the funny cards were. He picked up a few, his frown
only deepening. He had a perfectly good sense of humor. Duo and these card
writers though…. He picked a few that he didn't think were too lame, and handed them
to Duo.
Carefully looking them over, Duo pulled one out and grinned. "See? Monkeys."
Heero just shook his head.
They went out to dinner. Just a pizza place, nothing fancy, and afterward,
Heero let Duo drag him to the batting cages. When they got back to the
apartment, Duo called the shower first, and while he was still in the first
verse of his song, Heero wrote a quick note in the monkey card, and put it on
top of Duo's pillow. He then followed Duo into the shower, and helped him wring
the shampoo out of his hair, cajoling Duo into sticking around for the
conditioner. Duo slipped out to start drying his hair, and Heero finished his
own shower, even though the water was cool. Well. Cold.
When he got out, Duo's monkey card was on the table next to Duo's side of the
bed, and there was a card on his pillow. He opened it up while Duo went to get
a late night snack, grinning at the little cartoon Duo drew on the inside. He
put it on his table, just like Duo had done for his card.
He turned on the tv, and
held the sheets up for Duo to slip into bed with him. Duo fed him beef jerky
while he flipped through, but there was never anything decent to watch. They
ended up with a sci fi
movie that was supposed to be suspenseful but was
really mostly funny. Duo curled up to his side, wrapping his arms around
Heero's waist.
Smiling, Heero patted Duo's wet braid.
After they'd screwed around a bit, and he'd redone Duo's braid, they switched
off the lights. Duo kissed the side of his neck.
"I like using today as our birthday. It went well, don't you think?"
"Yeah," Heero whispered back, though why he was whispering…
"What's the date again?"
"…Let me check," Heero said, reaching out for his watch.
Duo laughed, pressing his forehead to the back of Heero's head. "Kinda different, huh, living like this… so we
don't even need
to know what day of the week it is."
"Yeah," Heero agreed, putting his watch back. They could figure out
the date tomorrow.
"Thanks," Duo said softly, and then turned around to sleep.
Heero didn't ask what he was being thanked for; he just waited until Duo's
breathing evened out, and then he turned, and put his arm around Duo.
